Fire Extinguisher Refill Test Discharge
Understanding Your Fire Extinguisher
What is an Extended Service?
An Extended Service will include a Test Discharge of your fire extinguishers to ensure that they function correctly. Such tests need to be undertaken every 5 years for water, powder and foam extinguishers, and every 10 years for CO2. Once we have completed a Test Discharge, we will then inspect the inside of the extinguisher to ensure that the body, head or other part hasn’t been contaminated.
What is a fire extinguisher refill?
Once we have completed an Extended Service on your fire extinguisher, we will refill and re-pressurise it. Then it will be approved to go back into service for a further 5 years. At Compliance Fire Ltd, we can refill and test some fire extinguishers on-site, such as water, foam, lithium extinguishers, water extinguishers, water with additive extinguishers and water mist extinguishers. Other extinguishers will need to be taken to a testing facility. In this instance, we will provide replacement extinguishers to ensure your compliance and safety.
Why refill an extinguisher?
Refilling a fire extinguisher is a cost-effective way of maintaining your fire safety equipment, particularly when comparing this to the cost of replacing fire extinguishers. Fire extinguishers are not just single use. In fact, most fire extinguishers can be refilled easily and quickly on-site.
Refilling a fire extinguisher should NEVER be attempted by anyone untrained or inexperienced. We strongly advise contacting professionals to refill your fire extinguishers to ensure your safety.
Why is fire extinguisher maintenance so important?

Periodically maintaining your fire extinguishers ensures that they will function fully in the event of a fire. We can test and refill all extinguishers including Co2, foam, wet chemical and powder to make sure they are functioning as they should.

What are the legal obligations of the responsible person/s regarding fire extinguishers?
Fire safety legislation for non-domestic premises in England and Wales is covered by the Regulatory Reform Order (RRO) (Fire Safety) 2005. This order states that appropriate fire-fighting equipment, including portable fire extinguishers, must be provided where there may be a fire risk.
In such establishments, the Regulatory Reform Order states that a Responsible Person/s (RP) is designated, usually a business owner or manager. The RP is responsible for fire safety risk assessments and implementing and maintaining fire management plans.
What are the legal obligations of the RP regarding fire extinguisher servicing?
The RP must ensure that fire extinguishers are maintained, serviced and in good working order. They must carry out monthly visual checks and arrange for a competent person to undertake annual fire extinguisher servicing.
